December 2016 Newsletter - Business PCs vs. Consumer PCs

Published on December 1, 2016

What is the difference between a business PC and a consumer PC?

What is the difference between business pcs vs. consumer pcs? Some general things that change from one to the other are hardware, cost, options, and Windows version. A business grade laptop or desktop has to work hard all day, every day. Therefore, they are made with tougher, stronger materials and with better quality hardware. Also, they come loaded with more memory, bigger storage, and a more powerful processor in order to handle the workload. Consumer grade equipment uses more plastic in the case design and less robust parts. Most people focus on the cost difference - business computers are the more expensive of the two. However, it's important to remember that you're getting what you pay for - a stronger, faster, more flexible computer. If your computer lasts an extra year or two, it was well worth the extra cost. Business PCs offer more options, like biometrics (fingerprint scanner), docking stations, and longer warranties. In addition, business PCs tend to have more ports and slots to connect to a wider variety of devices - useful for when you work in a variety of settings. Finally, business PCs will use the Pro version of Windows rather than the Home version. A complete comparison of features is available here but some important features that only come with Windows Pro are:
  • Ability to join the office domain
  • Support for Group Policy
  • Access via Remote Desktop
  • Bitlocker Encryption
In short, it's up to you but some people choose to buy the business grade computers even for home use.
